I think what impresses me most about this song is it's complete lack of actual words. Anyone can write a song with lyrics.

Another classic is "The New Sound". Great song about the sound that's made by worms.

There's a new sound
The newest sound around
The strangest sound that you have ever heard
Not like a wild boar
Or a jungle lion's roar
It isn't like the cry of any bird
But there's a new sound
It's deep down in the ground
And everyone who listens to it squirms
Because this new new sound
So deep down in the ground
Is the sound that's made by worms

Jeremy, you are on the right track with the Muppet Movie but wrong on the song. The greatest song in that movie is

Finale: The Magic Store/Rainbow Connection (reprise)

Just check out these lyrics.

Kermit:
It starts when we're kids, a show-off in school;
Makin' faces at friends, you're a clown and a fool.
Doin' prat-falls and bird-calls and bad imitations;
Ignoring your homework, now that's dedication.
You work to the mirror, you're getting standing ovations.

Muppets
You're burning with hope, you're building up steam.
What was once juvenilish is
Miss Piggy:
grown-up and stylish,
Muppets:
You're close to your dream.
Then somebody out there loves you,
Stands up and hollers for more;
Fozzie:
More!
Muppets:
You found a home at the Magic Store.

[Musical bridge]

"The Rainbow Connection" (reprise)

Kermit:
Why are there so many songs about rainbows?
Fozzie:
That's part of what rainbows do.
Gonzo:
Rainbows are memories, sweet dream reminders
Miss Piggy:
What is it you'd like to do?
Muppets:
All of us watching, and wishing we'd find it;
Fozzie:
I've noticed, you're watching too.
Muppets:
Someday you'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and you.

[Another Musical bridge]

Kermit/Muppets:
Life's like a movie, write your own ending
Keep believing, keep pretending
We've done just what we set out to do.
Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you.

It's Gold Jerry!

While it is a fantastic song, and after reading this, I've been singing it all afternoon, it is not only not the greatest song ever written, it's not even the greatest Muppet song ever written.

That distinction goes to "Movin' Right Along" from The Muppet Movie, written by Kenny Ascher and Paul Williams, performed by Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear.
